44 Hours a Week Online: Your Customers Already Work a Second Full-Time Job

U.S. internet users spend 44 hours a week consuming online media, more than a full-time job and nearly 10 hours above the global average. The trend is here to stay, and a business without a digital strategy is fighting against the grain.

U.S. internet users spend 44 hours and 6 minutes a week consuming online media, more than a 40-hour work week and nearly 10 hours more than the worldwide average of 34 hours and 16 minutes (GWI, Q2 2026, via DataReportal). No digital plan means fighting against the grain.

U.S. internet users spend about 44 hours a week consuming online media. That’s more than a full-time job. And it isn’t a phase: it’s how people live now. If your business doesn’t have a digital strategy and a plan to reach consumers where they spend that time, you’re fighting against the grain.

A full-time job’s worth of attention

A standard work week is 40 hours. According to GWI’s survey data, published in DataReportal’s October 2026 report with We Are Social and Meltwater, the average U.S. internet user spends 44 hours and 6 minutes a week with online media. The worldwide average is 34 hours and 16 minutes, so Americans spend nearly 10 more hours a week online than the global average.

GWI notes that these hours are added up across activities, so some of them overlap, like streaming music while scrolling social media. That doesn’t make the number less important. It means that for a big part of every day, your customers have a screen in front of them and something in their ears.

Where those hours go

The 44 hours include the places your customers relax, learn and decide what to buy:

  • Streaming TV. Streaming is now about half of all U.S. TV viewing; Nielsen measured a record 48.6% in May 2026.
  • Social media and short video. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, where about 1 in 5 U.S. adults now regularly get news.
  • Music and podcasts. Hours of listening on the commute, at the gym and at work.
  • Search and online news. Where people go the moment they need a dentist, a lawyer, a plumber or a place to eat.

This trend is here to stay

Every new habit, from streaming instead of cable to watching short videos instead of reading, has pushed more of the day online. Phones go everywhere, TVs are connected to the internet, and the next generation of customers has never known anything else. The question isn’t whether your customers are online. It’s whether they see your business while they’re there.

No digital plan means fighting against the grain

A business without a digital strategy is trying to reach people in the few hours a week they aren’t online, while competitors meet them in the 44 hours they are. That’s an expensive way to compete. A real digital plan answers four questions:

  1. Who are you trying to reach? The age, neighborhood and needs of the customers you want more of.
  2. Where do they spend their time? Streaming TV, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Google search, podcasts or all of the above.
  3. What will they see? Video, posts and ads that show your people and give them a reason to choose you.
  4. How will you know it’s working? Calls, website visits, form fills, foot traffic and sales, tracked every month.

And it works alongside traditional media, not instead of it. TV and radio build the name; digital puts that name in front of people the rest of the week and makes it easy to act.
